By this time tomorrow I am going to be on a plane heading to Professors Open Source Summer Experience South Africa I have the honour to be invited over as an instructor on this POSSE concerning Fedora Project and involvement on Open Source communities.
POSSE is an initiative of teachingopensource.org aiming to educate people within the academic environment to use foss practises and procedures, and engage them in foss projects from around the world. It is kindly sponsored by RedHat.
Mel Chua (one of three instructors) of Fedora and Sugar fame, is doing a fantastic job organizing this POSSE (thanks Mel!)
The schedule is well articulated and the sessions shall be very interesting I am supposed to fill in on Community aspects and describe the “insides” of an foss community. The basic concept behind those classes will be to train the attendees into becoming active contributors, engaged in various foss projects and even trainers themselves
Pass on the awesomeness!
On the practical side I am looking on a 20hrs flight through Dubai, reaching Cape Town Saturday evening. My colleagues Mel and Jan will arrive the next day, so I am thinking on how to spend some time on Cape Town (plz comment with proposals!) I try to contact the local hackerspace (robotics mainly) to see if I can host a session on Fedora (or even Fedora Electronic Lab).. will see
More updates to come on the next days (with many photos and details)
Cape Town get ready for Fedora-style awesomeness
Day two started with a little bit of delay for our Greek team as we meshed up the transportations (no we were not lost!).
Thankfully we made it in time for FPL‘s talk “Future of fedora” the main inspirational talk where Jared shared his vision for Fedora . “We are our greatest enemy” was the punchline and he is quite right about that! Keep up the high moral
Next it was Mo’s time to share her vision on the Design Team tools and workflows and the workshop run out of time before we examined more possible mockups and tools. BTW I think that she is doing an excellent job with this mock-ups and we *really* need to see them examine them and work on them. Take a look at : https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Website_redesign there are some great designs! Can’t wait for the actual site to start forming up
My time had come to introduce to the audience the “Design Suite“. After a brief introduction on what is a “Spin” and what set the Fedora Spins apart, we had the chance to take a deeper look on the packages and configurations proposed for the upcoming F14 Design Suite. I think we managed to reach a consensus on that: Design Suite should focus on the Graphic tools and provide also basic functionality for Audio and Video editing More on that will follow on a blogpost.
Afterwards, “spot” gave us an insight on the craziest ever legal system on the world. The U.S. one. Unfortunately Fedora (through RedHat) is bind by it and we need to make sure everything we do is still OK with the US laws and export regulations etc… Thats kind of restricting but also reassuring some times. We shall see
Finally by the end of the day the FUDPub time was on! We all ended up on a nice Pizza place and got beer after beer on discussions after discussions. They were some nice heated discussions with FPL conserning the future of Fedora in EMEA region and how we will facilitate the needs of the EMEA side of the project. It is still an active one and we need to follow on that and see what needs to be corrected or not.
Headed back to the hotel to get ourselves refuelled (yeap we need to sleep every now and then)
See ya tomorrow on the final day (Barcamp) on FUDCon Zurich 2010!
ps. still no photos, hopefully the last post will have some and a link to the picasa gallery
Long day today! (kinda two days…) Still no sleep after 40 hours, but full of excitement after a first day in FUDCon EMEA Zurich 2010!
We managed to get to the hotel at 7am and shook some hand with the rest of the team that was already there! (Jared Smith, Mo, Robert, Spot and others.)
After a quick ride downtown we ended up on the FrosCamp / FUDCon venue ETH Zurich. Organizing team did an excellent job with the place and we had the chance to meet some new and old faces from the foss world in Europe. (Debian boys, OpenStreetMap, LGMs, etc)
Our time was on and Jared Smith our new beloved Fedora Project Leader gave the mark and welcomed us on this year FUDCon EMEA! The first talk was about Fedora Packaging! At last I had the chance to hear Tom “spot” Callaway giving his best on getting us to build our very first packages And we made it! We actually had clean and working .spec and rpms in just an hour during this excellent workshop! Dear packages here I come….
After a small break to help on the booth (although Zoltan and Robert did an excellent job) we ended up on the “Campus Ambassadors” workshop by Biertie. I think we had a very constructive hour trying to justify the existence of the project and set some goals that can be actually feasible to achieve. Biertie is going to give his best to make sure that we have a alive and kicking Campus Ambassadors Subproject.
Moving from one workshop to another I had the pleasure/honour to meet again my best pal Nicu with his friend Andrian who cannot stop mocking me and I am determined to pay it back! (No I was not beaten by Ubuntu girls!)
After an truly inspiring and well structured talk by Mo about GIMP and Inkscape (which kept me thinking about my talk on Design Suite and how much it will suck ) we got ourselves on the Party “Wired Dreams” ETH was throwing for as. 3 hours, 3 Free free beers and 3 times beaten in table soccer I decided to leave to get some rest on the hotel (which by the way is fabulous! thanks cmpahar for booking!)
Tomorrow , is going to be more Fedora magic and more Community excitement! Stay tuned for rushed updates (and some nasty pics of a long time fedora contributor… )
ps. no photos as you can see so far, but you can expect some on the end as an album at Picasa. luck of bandwidth makes my blogging tough task
In three hours I am going to be in a plane for Zurich with my friends Christos and Vangelis. Today was a long travelling by car day from Athens to Thessaloniki…
I am still trying to decide the core concept behind the workshop on the Design Suite that I will give in 2 days. Shall I mesh with the new experimental .ks or shall I stick with the one branched for F14? :S I guess I could scratch both and test some scenario-usages on the fly…
I will have many Design Team members to back me up and of course my pervert-pal Nicu.
leaving to test some .ks …
See ya in FUDCon in 9 hours!
