Legacy link context menu addon

Moving from Firefox 3.x to Firefox 4?

Used to having “Open link in New Tab” as a second option on Right click menu and now it is first?

Are you tired ending up with all those new windows you do *not* want?

Well, here is an add-on for you!

Legacy link context menu addon is an addon that swaps the position of those two menu items so you can have your legacy menu still on Firefox 4 :)

You can download it today from Mozilla Add-Ons website

Built by me using Jetpack, under 30minutes with guidance from Dietrich.. Thanks Dietrich!

Enjoy!

You should remind everyone and tell people that don’t know it that you can simply middle-click a link to open it on a new tab. It surprised me at first, but many people don’t know that.

Why do people use the context menu for this rather than middle-clicking or ctrl-clicking?

Also, note that extensions like this stop people from getting used to the new layout, which just means they’ll have to deal with it later.

Not content with your Intel Nehalem Xeon processor not having an A20 gate? Get your extension card now to make it completely compatible with any 8086-program.”

Maybe sometimes we should drop legacy things in favor of current things. If you’re preferring tabs anyways, why would you like to move your mouse right AND down when moving it right would be enough?

“Why do people use the context menu for this rather than middle-clicking or ctrl-clicking?”

Middle-clicking is generally awkward (one pixel off and you’re locked into in a scroll behaviour, if you’re lucky) and doesn’t work cross-platform (ie. laptops). Ctrl-clicking feels unintuitive to me, I’ve never managed to adopt it into my browsing habits.

Also, the menu lets me know what I can do in any given context. Ctrl-clicking only works if you assume the thing you’re hovering over is a link. Post Web 2.0 this has a habit of not being correct.

That said I do prefer the new menu layout and since ‘contextual menu is contextual’ I don’t expect it to look the same every time I use it!

In fact having just observed my browsing habits, I tend to have my hand well away from the keyboard unless I need it for some particular purpose. That might explain why I’ve never liked ctrl-clicking.
